Obesity In Children
Obesity in children rates are at an all time high. You don't have to look very far to see a child with weight issues which is very concerning to me. When I was growing up as a child, in the early 80's, obesity in children was not something you regularly experienced in our school system.
Kids were active, playing outside on the outdoor gym equipment, and not inside all day long in front of the computer or TV, like you see today. Playground equipment facilities are no longer filled with playful kids because of technology including videos games, internet, and other indoor activities that encourage kids to be less active.
Today, the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) indicates that for children aged 2–5 years, prevalence increased from 5.0% to 12.4%; for those aged 6–11 years, prevalence increased from 6.5% to 17.0%; and for those aged 12–19 years, prevalence increased from 5.0% to 17.6%.
Inactivity is not the only cause of the problem. Unhealthy eating habits have also affected the rates of obesity in children. Convenient, processed, and fast foods high in fat and calories have been a driving force to the most unhealthy children recorded in history. Kids are eating themselves to death and there needs to be some changes made immediately.
We can no longer be satisfied with the situation because we are creating a generation of kids that will die before their parents. As childhood obesity is a growing epidemic all over the world. I highly recommend visiting www.stop-childhood-obesity.com to learn about the causes, effects, and ways to prevent obesity in children. Bottom line is that we need to encourage our children to play outside, eat more balanced, and turn off the TV's.
The link between obesity in children and the incredibly high rates of overweight and obesity among adults is obviously cause and effect. Parents need to decide themselves to make healthier eating choices and commit to a regular physical fitness program. Studies have suggested that adults who are obese are about 25% likely to be obese as a child. Those rates even increase significantly if obesity in children is found under the age of 8 years.
Beachbody's mission is to reverse the trend of obesity not only in parents but also in children as this disease affects everyone. In addition to home fitness workouts for adults, we also have several workout routines for kids to help reduce the obesity in children levels. Of course any of our fitness programs can be adapted to fit the needs of young children and I'd be glad to help you find one to fit your needs as well as those of your kids. Let's reduce the rate of obesity in children one family at a time!
