Exercise for Children
Regular exercise for children is just as important as it is for adults. Physical activity is not only helpful at maintaining a healthy weight but it also allows them to be more productive at school, sleep better, build healthy bones, and give them more overall energy. The new generation of children are much less active than they were even a decade ago causing major health concerns including obesity in children, diabetes, and other diseases we should not be seeing in kids.
Exercise for children is much different than adults though because instead of walking on a treadmill or lifting weights, kids activities should be participating in regular "kid" activities like recess, soccer, playing tag, or just having fun with friends on the playground.
Today kids are not getting enough activity because they are inside playing video games or watching TV. Studies suggest that kids are watching up to 3 hours a day of TV. Another common concern is that even during school hours, kids are less active due to reduced time for physical education (P.E.) and even recess. As a physical education major, I know that kids are getting sometimes less than 30 minutes of play or structured activity breaks each day.
How much is enough exercise for children?
Health professionals suggest that kids over the age of 2 get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity on most, if not all day of the week. For more information on exercise for children and how to keep them active go to KidsHealth.org to learn more information.
