Benefits of Physical Fitness

The benefits of physical fitness obviously outweigh the risks so why is it that we still have 60% of the American adult population who choose not to engage in regular physical activity? Physical fitness helps us to improve and maintain optimum health and wellness, reduces our chances of chronic disease, and is an essential tool in the fight against overweight and obesity.

The definition of physical fitness is defined as one's ability to function efficiently and effectively, to enjoy leisure, to be healthy, to resist disease, and to cope with emergency situations. In short, the benefits of physical fitness is obviously being able to do day-to-day functions without fatigue. This may include walking to your car, playing actively with your children, or just meeting the physical demands of your job.

To reap the benefits of physical fitness one doesn't have to have the ability to run 5 miles a day or do an hour of cardio 7 days a week. It is important to understand that there are many ways to get into shape and accumulate the recommended amount of physical activity each day. Most government organizations including the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) recommend for health benefits one accumulate at least 30 minutes of moderate intense activity on at least 5 days a week, preferably 7 days. Obviously starting an exercise routine is very important so learn more about beginning a physical fitness program. Get started off on the right foot!

You might be asking, "What activities are considered to be moderate?" Some examples include walking at a brisk pace, mowing the law, a slow job, and/or swimming laps. Anything that will increase your heart rate moderately will get the job done.

One of the most common reasons we don't get enough exercise is because we live in such a fast paced lifestyle that we don't have enough time to add anything else into our busy schedules. Each of the above activities do not requite any additional equipment, funds, are quite easy to do, and can be completed during everyday tasks.

Even with all of the knowledge we have about the benefits of physical fitness why don't more people take action and get off the couch? One reason is that we live in a face-paced society and it can get challenging to fit exercise into our schedules. To combat this excuse (because that's what it is) is to FIND TIME throughout your day or schedule time just as you would any other appointment you would be less likely to skip.

Here are some ideas on how to get moving more while going about your day.

  1. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator in public building.
  2. Taking your kids or pets for a walk
  3. Push mowing your yard instead of gardening.
  4. Walk around the mall before you start your shopping
  5. Parking further away from the shopping mall or at work instead of taking the closet stall to the front of the building.
  6. Another tip to keep you motivated is to keep an exercise journal.

Another excuse that I hear most often is that exercise is boring or doesn't interest someone. This most often is because they haven't found something to keep their attention or an activity that interests them. For example, I do not like running or walking on a treadmill because I don't find that interesting and lose interest quickly. Therefore, I use home fitness programs from Beachbody to keep the spice into my workout routine because I have hundreds of programs to choose from.

We have over 130 different programs to meet the needs of any interest level. I also enjoy taking my dogs for a walk a few days a week which also helps keep me active. You need to find something that you enjoy and if you can do that staying physically fit will no longer seem like a chore and you can reap the benefits of physical fitness too!
